For its first temporary exhibition in its new building, the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne has chosen to highlight one of the most significant episodes of the turn of the 19th century: the contribution of the Viennese art scene to the birth of modern art, which is one of the most extraordinary episodes in the history of European art. We know the essential role played by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka in the fine arts, by Otto Wagner, Joseph Hoffmann and Koloman Moser in architecture and the applied arts. This book comments on the work of these great artists, as well as that of many creators engaged alongside them in the fight for an art that changes life. It offers a new thematic reading of the period between 1897 (foundation of the Vienna Secession) and 1918 (dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire). By bringing together a rich body of work and contributions from specialists who also address the contribution of medical science, theosophy and psychoanalysis, he traces the emergence of a new sensibility, expressed through plastic work focusing on the skin. It is by exploring the mysteries of this sensitive surface that the Viennese Moderns will redefine the relationships between modern man and the world, the everyday object and its environment, the building and the street.
