For 50 years, the French Archaeological Mission of Saqqara has tirelessly excavated the sands of the Egyptian desert. Conceived in 1963 by its two eminent founders, Jean Leclant and Jean-Philippe Lauer, it has devoted extensive time to the study of the Pyramid Texts, enriching the work of early philologists with its regular discoveries. The ongoing excavation of the necropolis of Pepy I has also broadened our vision of the funerary world as conceived by the ancient Egyptians. The multitude of monuments, texts, bas-reliefs, and objects reveals women and men who tell us a fragment of their hope for eternity. The contributions in this book bring together the past and present actors of the MafS around a single project. Their richness and variety testify to the scope and dynamism the mission has demonstrated throughout its history.
